Kinematics#
Four-momentum#
Consider a particle with mass \(m\), energy \(E\) and spatial momentum \(\vec{p}\). We define four-momentum
Real states satisfy the so-called mass-shell condition, given by
\(p^2\) can be viewed as a scalar product \((p\cdot p)\) in Minkowski space, with a metric tensor
Switching to another inertial reference frame happens via a Lorentz transformation \(\Lambda\) which has the property
i.e. it leaves the Minkowski scalar product invariant. Since physical observables should be independent of a reference frame, they only depend on scalar quantities.

As an example, consider a \(2\to2\) process, with four external four-momenta: \(p_1, p_2, q_1, q_2\), as depicted on Fig. 4 (a). One can write down all possible scalar products between these momenta,

Of course, \(\theta_s\) is not a Lorentz-invariant quantity. It denotes the angle between \(\vec{p}_1\) and \(\vec{q_1}\) in the center of mass system (CMS). One can show that \(\sqrt{s} = E_{\mathrm{CMS}}\). Naturally,
These conditions can be used to arrive at the notion of kinematic regions. For \(s\)-channel scattering, we have

Consider crossed reactions of this process, depicted on Fig. 4 (b–c). We call these \(t\)- and \(u\)-channel processes, since they are obtained by substituting \((s \leftrightarrow t)\) and \((s \leftrightarrow u)\), respectively. These substitutions also affect Eq. (18) and result into two additional kinematic regions, depicted on Fig. 5, together with the decay region, corresponding to Fig. 4 (d) (for details, see [3]). While these kinematic regions are disjoint and belong to different physical processes, they are related via crossing symmetry, which we will discuss in the following section.
Cross sections, decay rates, and the phase space#
When we talk about particle scattering, the relevant observable quantity is the differential cross section \(\text{d}\sigma\). Likewise, when we consider a decay, we concern ourselves with the differential decay rate \(\text{d}\Gamma\). Both of these quantities are defined per n-body phase space element of the outgoing state, given by
where \(P\) is the total four-momentum of the n-body system. In case of \(2\to n\) scattering, the differential cross section is computed via
while in case of \(1\to n\) decay, the differential decay rate is defined as
In both cases, \(\mathcal{M}\) is the invariant amplitude of the reaction, which encodes the dynamics of the system (and will be discussed in the upcoming sections). In the simple case of two-body final state, one can exploit the Dirac delta function to integrate over four out of six kinematic variables and show that
